I have watched all the football worldcups from 1990.
Now that the worldcup is approaching and I am eagerly waiting for the feast.
Argentina has always been my favourites.
Some memories....
Italia 1990
I was then perhaps in the 3rd std. But memories are afresh.
My team was Argentina and my enemy team was West Germany. I still remember how sad I was after seeing that penalty-goal by Andres Brehme for that unintentional handball by Canegia in the penalty area.
But, the game I remember well in that worldcup is the semifinal between Argentina and Italy. Goicasia the saviour... all the spot-ons done by the golden boy Skilatchi, through out the tournament, went in vain...
The names I remember...
Lothar Mathaus(W.Ger)
Jurgen Klinsman(W.Ger)
Andres Brehme(W.Ger)
Rudi Voller(W.Ger)
Thomas Hassler(W.Ger)
Gary Linekar(Eng)
Peter Shilton(Eng)
Roberto Baggio(Ita)
Skilatchi(Ita)
Maradona(Arg)
Goicosia(Arg)
Canegia(Arg)
Valderema(Col)
Higuitta(Col)
Marco Van Baston(Holland)
Rud Gullit(Holland)
Frank Rijkard(Holland)
George Hagi(Romania)
Roger Milla(Cameroon)
1994 US
This worldcup saw the exit of a legend. Maradona had to quit, off drugging. He was still the king.
Though not so praised, my man in this worldcup was Bebetto. Romaria stealed the show winning the golden boot. I think the golden boot was shared with a Russian, Olego Salenko, owing to his record score against Cameroon. Bulgaria stunned the Germans in the quarter finals. I still remember that header goal by a bald man which eventually killed the Germans(2-1).
The penalty shot by (then)veteran, Roberto Baggio flew above the goal post helping the Brazilians to stand again on the top of the world.
Bail out :- This is purely out of my memory. I may have misspelled or wrote some thing wrong.... Bear with it.. :-)
